The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) is undertaking much-needed reform to shift its mission from persecuting gun owners to assuring that the federal government enforces Second Amendment rights.
Naturally, the ever-present anti-gun factions are in an uproar over this change in direction. Predictable declarations of dire consequences have come fast and furious in recent days.
Last week, no less than three such outfits raged against positive changes.
Anti-2A forces predictably cry wolf over anything supporting gun rights
Everytown for Gun Safety, Brady, and Giffords jointly asserted that the reforms intended to alleviate hurdles to lawful gun ownership “dismantle critical protections designed to keep firearms out of the hands of people legally prohibited from possessing them.”
Brady President Kris Brown lamented that the proposed rule adjustments “are sweeping structural changes that will reshape how guns are bought and sold in America, a country where guns outnumber people.”
Brown went further and claimed that falling violent crime rates across the nation resulted partially from “effective firearm policies.” Really? How’s that working out in Chicago, Memphis, or New Orleans?
Gun rights opponents cannot conceive of actual progress in protecting good citizens
Everytown President John Feinblatt complained about changes to streamline the process of obtaining a firearm. He accused the ATF of not being able to function properly, as if the suppression of gun rights was the agency’s mission.
Emma Brown of Giffords pushed the same narrative that the nearly three dozen proposed improvements in federal policy would bring carnage in the streets.
“The Trump administration’s proposed rules will roll back critical protections that have helped stop gun trafficking and gun crimes,” she said. “The fact that gun violence is at a low across communities isn’t by happenstance.”
No, and it’s certainly not due to onerous restrictions on the rights of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms.
