Garden State anti-gunners zipped right through the denial phase and into grief and anger after the Third Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the long-standing state ban on so-called “assault weapons” and standard-capacity magazines.
Last week’s decision spawned a wave of vitriol from the usual quarters, including State Senate President Nicholas P. Scutari (D).
Short-sighted leaders believe disarming law-abiding citizens protects public safety
“The Third Circuit Court’s decision to overturn New Jersey’s effective, nation-leading ban on assault rifles and high-capacity magazines is a misguided, calculated attack on public safety and common-sense firearm restrictions,” Scutari declared in a statement.
The lawmaker then trashed the most popular sporting rifles in the country as “weapons of war.”
New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport called the court’s affirmation of Second Amendment rights “as unfortunate as it is legally incorrect.”
Expect a flurry of new anti-2A legislation from NJ’s ‘leadership’
Instead of taking their lumps and abiding by the Constitution and courts, lawmakers intend to double down on oppressing the right to keep and bear arms. That was glaringly apparent in remarks following the judicial defeat by Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald (D).
He vowed to immediately push for a state law to require firearms in the home to be unloaded and locked away.
In other words, practically useless in an emergency.
One of Greenwald’s colleagues, Assemblyman Brian Bergen (R), injected some much-needed sanity into the state’s reaction to having its hand slapped by the Third Circuit. He correctly foresaw an onslaught of frivolous gun restrictions as the likely response.
“We’re constantly wasting time, energy, and money focused on things that are settled business…The ruling happened, it’s the ruling,” Bergen observed.
The assemblyman added that, while New Jersey can challenge the court’s decision, it is also predictable that the state will “throw all kinds of bills against the wall to see what sticks.”
