The fixation on magically imprinting small identifiers on firing pins and ammunition is gathering steam in California and elsewhere, despite the recent federal finding that “significant disagreement” remains over whether this is just another unworkable anti-gun scheme.
The Commerce Department’s National Institutes of Standards and Technology (NIST) informed Congress that conclusive evidence for “microstamping’s” reliability is not available with existing research.
Supporters see a magic crime-solving wand
Officials reviewed mountains of research on this process and determined the results are not what Second Amendment opponents claim they are.
How is this “crime-solving” technology supposed to work?
According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the firearm industry trade group, firing pins would have an alphanumeric or gear code that they would stamp onto cartridges as they are ejected. Just like that, a link to the weapon that would lead investigators to the truth.
Microstamping proponents ignore reality of firearm components
NIST officials dismissed this as a pipe dream; with existing technology, there is no reliable way to create consistent imprints on cartridges that criminal investigators can decipher.
To be clear, states such as California funded their own studies that magically produced the results that those paying for them sought. The Golden State wants to burden the Second Amendment industry with expensive mandates and, even more ominously, criminal liability when the unreliable tech fails.
California’s rabid gun control proponent Attorney General, Rob Bonta, last summer jumped the proverbial gun and declared that microstamping is indeed viable.
Senate Bill 452 mandates that if components are available and financially possible, as soon as January 1, 2028, gun shops would be prohibited from selling new handguns without the microstamping function installed.
New Jersey officials also embarked on this crusade, but they failed to find a commercially available pistol that would imprint fired cartridges with unique identifiers.
This is yet another example of the “death by papercut” approach of gun control radicals. Throw every possible impediment in the way of lawful firearm ownership until the industry is finally driven into the ground.
