It’s still hot in most of the country, but the fall political season ahead of November’s pivotal midterm elections is well underway. Anti-gunners just fired the first shot across the bow.
Gun control outfit Giffords announced it is “all in” for the looming elections. It mapped out a plan to pour $10 million into opposition to candidates with strong pro-Second Amendment track records.
Make no mistake, there is far more money than this being dumped into the campaign coffers of political hopefuls who will work tirelessly to strip away your right to keep and bear arms. Giffords is just the loudest at this stage.
Anti-gunners know that just a few flipped seats will make a huge difference
Executive Director Emma Brown told Semafor that her group’s strategic spending seeks to stack Congress against firearm ownership.
She said Giffords is “punching above our weight by being smarter with our investments and looking for the places where these races can be swung by voters who are concerned about public safety and keeping guns away from dangerous people.”
There is no demographic more solidly in the corner of denying violent criminals the ability to possess these weapons than gun owners, but that’s not the true goal of Giffords and its ilk.
Instead, they take the easy way out by railing against inanimate objects protected by the Constitution and turn attention away from true reform that would remove predators from our streets.
Giffords claims support for ‘public safety’ while disarming the people
Among the most prominent targets of these clearly partisan efforts are former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers, running for the Senate out of Michigan, Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-VA), and Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-NJ).
Over two million dollars is earmarked to support opponents of these gun rights supporters.
It will not take a major overhaul in either the House or Senate to put control of either or both chambers in the hands of anti-2A forces.
Everything from attacks on so-called “assault weapons” and not recognizing carry permits from other states to renewed efforts to cripple the firearms industry financially through frivolous lawfare will gain new life if Giffords is successful.
The shooting community needs to pay careful attention to these and other key races. And it is critical that votes and dollars back candidates who respect the right to keep and bear arms.
Anything less will be a disaster for gun rights.
