Family violence is a sad fact of life and has been from the beginning. Brother against brother is as old as time, and sometimes these confrontations get so far out of hand that potentially lethal force is justified.
That appears to be the case in an explosive scenario that erupted Friday afternoon in Grovetown, Georgia. A man reportedly had to step up and defend himself, his 4-year-old daughter, and his mother–-from his own brother.
Family violence is a frightening and regrettable situation
It was just after 3:30 p.m. Friday when authorities were called to a residence on reports of shots fired. Arriving officers found 34-year-old Matthew Simmons suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper leg.
After interviewing witnesses, investigators pieced together the alarming story.
The elder Simmons brother allegedly attacked his younger sibling, D’Andre. According to Grovetown police, when their 55-year-old mother attempted to intervene, she was struck, as was the 4-year-old child present. That was enough for the younger brother.
Attack allegedly continued even after older brother was shot
Investigators believe he retrieved a loaded gun and fired a warning shot into the floor–not an act most experts advise when confronted by an attacker. However, when that did not stop the suspect, D’Andre Simmons reportedly fired one round into his brother’s upper leg.
The defender managed to call emergency services and stayed on the line until authorities reached the scene.
Amazingly, witnesses said the attack continued briefly after the suspect was hit before finally ending. First responders applied a tourniquet before EMS arrived and took him to a local hospital; his present condition is unknown.
The older brother faces charges when he is released from the hospital, but not the younger man who defended his family. While it must have been painful to shoot a close family member, defending one’s mother and small child takes priority over every other concern.
