Law-abiding Americans should not be forced to wait for weeks to legally purchase a firearm, but that’s the sorry state of affairs in Minnesota. The U.S. Department of Justice looks to change that.
Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet K. Dhillon put Gov. Tim Walz (D) and the mayors of Minneapolis and St. Paul on notice that the state’s statutory waiting period for handguns and certain rifles will draw a strong federal response without quick action.
Wednesday, September 23, at 5 p.m. EST, to be exact.
DOJ sends another strong message to gun control outliers
Dhillon posted on X that Minnesota officials lack the power to “deny Americans the right to purchase commonly owned firearms with weeks-long waiting periods.”
The state’s 30-day requirement sometimes stretches to twice that long for weapons purchases, an unconscionable delay that endangers upstanding citizens who have every right to armed self-defense.
The AAG warned that once the deadline passes, there may be no further notice before federal action begins. The National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) posted its satisfaction with Dhillon’s latest strike against anti-gunners.
Waiting 2 months for a gun permit is indefensible
“Good news, Minnesota!” the group wrote. “The DOJ Civil Rights Division just notified Tim Walz that it intends to sue over the state’s Permit to Purchase and Transferee Report schemes. Both make you wait up to 30 days to buy a handgun, even after you’ve passed an NICS check. In Minneapolis and St. Paul, the wait routinely runs past that. Some buyers have waited closer to 60 days.”
A Minnesota resident who possesses a carry permit can bypass the mandatory delay, but most do not. In that case, the individual may file a Transferee Report with local authorities and wait 30 days for permission.
They may also ask the chief of police to grant a Permit to Purchase, which is entirely at the officer’s discretion. They also have 30 days to respond.
