When a statewide ballot initiative to ban hunting and fishing gathers tens of thousands of signatures, as one recently did in Oregon, sporting traditions are under attack.
That makes Thursday’s Executive Order, “Reinvigorating America’s Hunting Heritage,” even more timely and critical. President Donald Trump (R) signed the order, which now protects traditional ammunition and fishing tackle, expands access to public lands, and encourages state agencies to move away from archaic Sunday hunting laws.
Traditions enjoyed for centuries are suddenly threatened
Joe Bartozzi, NSSF President and CEO, attended the White House Rose Garden ceremony and noted years of fighting and advocacy to safeguard the nation’s rich outdoor heritage.
“This is a tremendous victory to ensure that America’s hunting heritage is protected for today’s hunters and the coming generations of outdoorsmen and women,” Bartozzi said. “NSSF has long championed several of the key policy issues, including protecting the right to use traditional ammunition, accessing public lands, and increasing opportunities for Sunday hunting.”
The White House released a statement doubling down on preserving sporting traditions from misguided policies and restrictions.

“Hunting opportunities in the United States have declined due to Federal regulatory overreach, confusing and inconsistent policies, and heavy-handed restrictions,” the release read. “America’s hunting heritage must be reinvigorated, protected, and expanded to benefit Americans.”
Of course, those who view hunting and fishing as detrimental to society immediately pushed back.
Humane World for Animals, the new version of the Humane Society of the United States, questioned opening more than 92 million federal acres across 32 states.
“The order raises serious concerns about how wildlife on public lands, which belong to all Americans, will be managed, including whether decisions will continue to prioritize science-based conservation and the health of wildlife and their habitats,” the group claimed.
This further proved the need to protect traditions that fell out of favor with some in modern times. Hunting and fishing have been handed down to youth over countless generations, and for the first time, these cultural heirlooms are under threat.
