Defensive gun uses happen every single day in the U.S., but Second Amendment opponents insist that they are exceedingly rare. But while opinions are a personal decision, facts are not.
Another shining example emerged early Wednesday morning in Austin, Texas. While it’s tragic that the suspect lost his life, it was apparently the result of a very unwise decision that made an innocent intended victim fear for his life.
Burglars apparently do not anticipate that homeowners are armed and ready
Austin Police Department officers responded before 4 a.m. to a call concerning a possible burglary attempt and shots fired. What they found upon arrival should serve as a warning to violent criminals who mistakenly believe that they are in control and their targets are defenseless.
According to investigators, 24-year-old Dmario Antonie Jones broke into the private residence and went into the homeowner’s bedroom. Perhaps awakened by the sound of forced entry, the resident was ready.
Shots were fired, and the now-wounded Jones somehow managed to get out of the home. But not far.
Officer Aaron Townsend told local media that the suspect was found in the front yard with “obvious trauma to his body.” EMS attempted to save his life, but within minutes he was pronounced dead.
Greater publicity for such incidents should be a deterrent
The homeowner was questioned as procedure required, and he reportedly cooperated with investigators and was soon released with no charges filed against him. He certainly must deal with the psychological trauma of the violent incident, but he should realize that the deadly choice that night was made by another person who decided that the risk was worth it.
It wasn’t.
The loss of a young person’s life is tragic, even when he apparently used his free will to make a terrible decision. With more national media coverage of these everyday confrontations, word may spread that these actions often carry deadly consequences.
The warning would be clear, and lives would be saved.
