Delivery drivers are everywhere, especially since the pandemic lockdowns drove shoppers from brick-and-mortar stores to online retailers. But besides finding the right house and the occasional canine greeting when they do, these hard workers also must deal with being targets for bad guys.

On Saturday afternoon in Cleveland, the latest good guy with a gun incident involved an armed Amazon driver.

It was 4:00 p.m., not the time when it would seem prudent to be on the lookout for a potential carjacker. But that’s exactly what a delivery driver faced in the Ohio City neighborhood.

According to a media release from the Cleveland Division of Police, the obviously stunned driver was approached at gunpoint by a suspect attempting to steal the delivery truck. That did not go as planned.

The Amazon driver was armed and prepared and managed to fire at least one shot at the suspect. The alleged carjacker still managed to gain control of the vehicle and briefly drive, and it is unclear if the shot that struck the suspect came before or after the delivery truck was taken.

Authorities raced to the scene of the wrecked work vehicle to find the unidentified 17-year-old suspect dead.

Thankfully no injuries to the Amazon driver were reported, and the employee who apparently defended themselves does not currently face charges.

It will be interesting to learn the response from Amazon over the incident. Despite the dangers inherent with driving in and out of neighborhoods carrying packages of merchandise, the company has a no-weapons policy in place to prevent drivers from exercising armed self-defense.

The driver apparently knew the dangers of their job, which include nighttime deliveries and service to questionable areas. And they were demonstrably correct in their assessment.

While any loss of life so young is tragic, it is a risky business attempting to carjack anyone in a major city in 2024. People are wising up to the threat and arming themselves to be their own first responder in times of emergency.
