It was just before midnight Wednesday when a fearful outburst threatened several apartment residents in DeKalb County, Georgia. According to eyewitnesses, an apparently deranged man went door to door trying to gain entry while armed with a machete.
As is often the case, the first responder who halted the threat was a civilian with a loaded firearm. The unidentified suspect failed to get into multiple units before successfully entering one.
His last.
Yet another example of an armed civilian saving lives
The resident was ready, possibly having been alerted to the mayhem by the commotion the suspect caused going from apartment to apartment. The defender fired at least one shot that likely saved lives–including their own and others.
First responders arrived and found the man suffering what were described as non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment, and so far there is no word on possible motivation or charges against the suspect.
The fact that he was successful in breaching one residence before being shot was not lost on an elderly neighbor.
Target believes suspect was enraged by her religious decorations
One of the earlier targets was only described as 74-year-old Ms. Brown, who said the suspect expressed anger over religious symbols she kept outside her apartment door. He reportedly threatened her several times and kept returning to kick her door in apparent attempts to gain entry.
“I heard bam, bam, bam,” Brown recalled. “The door started coming out. I had to take my sofa and push it against the door because it was coming out of the frame. I am beyond words.”
She added her appreciation for the hero who shot him “because he was wielding around that machete, and he was planning to kill people. Completely insane. Couldn’t be in his right mind.”
Right mind or not, kicking in doors while carrying a machete doesn’t leave much room for nuance, and the apartment dweller who ended the rampage by all accounts had no choice but to act.
