A courageous New Mexico grandmother shot an alleged home invader and auto thief in self-defense and to protect her four-year-old grandson. She reported the suspect twice broke into her Albuquerque home on Friday night.

The alarming incident unfolded after police attempted to pull over a stolen truck. Officers utilized spike strips to stop the vehicle, and the driver attempted to flee with the truck “on its rims” before crashing.

The suspect, 32-year-old Joseph Rivera, reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled officers in pursuit on foot in a residential neighborhood.

It was then that he allegedly attempted to force his way into the grandmother’s home at around 9:30 p.m. He was successful and that’s when she reportedly encountered him inside the residence.

The woman told police that he was agitated and talked of avoiding jail, which led to her handing him keys from a bowl in the kitchen. She said she had the opportunity at that point to arm herself but was unsure if the suspect was carrying a weapon as well.

But he appeared to leave, prompting her to grab a weapon and protect her grandson in the bedroom. That’s when Rivera allegedly reentered the home and advanced on her.

This time the grandmother did not hesitate and fired a single shot. The suspect went down, and she called 911 before tending to his wounds while waiting for the police to arrive.

While this action after the shooting was questionable, she and her grandson managed to escape the frightening encounter physically unharmed.

Rivera faces numerous charges when he is released from the hospital. They include burglary, attempted burglary and auto theft. His criminal history included a case last summer involving a stolen vehicle and possession of fentanyl, cocaine and heroin.

He failed to show up for an October court hearing and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

It took courage and quick thinking on the grandmother’s part to arm herself and protect her grandson after the suspect fled. Thankfully she was ready when he reentered, or the saga may have had a much different ending.
