A lawful and ready firearm in the hands of an upstanding citizen is often the front line of defense against violence when there is no one there to save the gun owner or other victims. Sadly, that also applies to animal attacks.
Tazewell County Animal Control in Morton, Illinois, responded to a call last Thursday at approximately noon concerning two dogs terrorizing a neighborhood. The officer arrived at the scene and discovered both animals attacking a minor, and an armed civilian raced to assist the young person.
The good guy with a gun, who holds a valid Illinois Concealed Carry License (CCL), fired a single shot at the dog after it turned its attention from the youth and raced toward the civilian.
Good citizen had to use deadly force to end threat
MPD officials released harrowing details about the frightening incident.
“Before the arrival of Morton Police officers, the dog that attacked the juvenile charged at the citizen. The citizen, who is a licensed concealed carry holder, discharged a firearm and fatally shot the dog.” Tazewell County Animal Control safely captured the second dog involved in the incident.
Authorities announced they identified the animals’ owner.

Officers treated the juvenile on the spot before first responders transported the individual to a hospital for treatment of injuries from multiple dog bites.
Animal control and law enforcement authorities are conducting a joint investigation. There was no immediate word on criminal charges or civil citations against the owner for negligence.
What was demonstrated for all was the importance of having a legal weapon and the skill to wield it when faced with an immediate threat. No decent person enjoys shooting a dog, but some are an absolute danger that must be dealt with.
As for the unidentified owner, they probably should not plan any trips soon.
