Situational awareness is always important, and it is doubly important to be prepared.

A Marysville, Washington, resident had this lesson driven home Sunday when he came under attack by three alleged home invaders. It was just after midnight when the unidentified homeowner returned to the residence.

Police believe the three male suspects drove by in a stolen red Camaro and zeroed in on the homeowner. At least one of the men began firing toward the intended victim, whose children were present in the home.

The homeowner bolted inside the dwelling, retrieved a weapon and returned fire at the attackers. Neighbors told local media that they heard what sounded like a shootout in the middle of the night.

One nearby resident, Michael Schrock, said his family ran upstairs and peeked out of the window to see the commotion. “There were people at the house across the street shooting off rounds and then the people inside the house started shooting off rounds.”

The houses on the street are just feet apart, and Schrock said he hid his children from the nearby danger.

The three men who allegedly attacked the home fled.

Authorities who arrived on the scene called in a K-9 unit and drones to search for the suspects. One of those who ran from the scene had been shot by the homeowner, and he was taken into custody by police. He reportedly “has a long criminal history.”

The stolen car was left behind as the other two suspects ran away. Marysville police consider both to be armed and dangerous.

There has been no information released on the cause of the shooting or any of the three alleged attackers. This, of course, left neighbors to fill in the blanks.

Schrock called it “crazy” to think that “it’s something drug-related or something like that. Why would people come here and shoot up some house?”

That is currently unknown, but it is clear that the homeowner was prepared enough to quickly react when attacked and have a firearm ready for self-defense. That readiness may have saved lives.
