Law-abiding Colorado gun owners will have more restrictions on their right to carry firearms if the state Senate gets its way. On Wednesday, lawmakers passed legislation to ban licensed concealed carry permit holders from possessing their weapons in five new locations.

These so-called “sensitive places” laid out in SB 24-131 include courthouses, government buildings, legislative assemblies, schools and polling centers.

There are exceptions built in for law enforcement, military members, the National Guard and security personnel. Violation of the measure, if it becomes state law, will be a Class 1 misdemeanor.

State Sen. Sonya Jaquez Lewis (D) told local media that the legislative body worked to align the measure with landmark U.S. Supreme Court rulings in the Bruen and Heller cases. However, it is unclear which part of the history and tradition of firearm regulation proponents relied on — as required by Bruen.

Supporters reportedly had a laundry list of locations where they sought a blanket gun ban, but that proved troublesome. The list was trimmed to five to ensure the measure’s passage.

Anti-Second Amendment organization Giffords helped craft the Senate bill.

The group’s Jessie Ojeda explained, “Part of why we chose to narrow this bill is the way that we did in that the Supreme Court unequivocally stated that the locations that we have in this bill in this form are presumptively lawful, and to date, no law with these specific locations has been successfully challenged.”

But make no mistake, supporters of SB 24-131 will use its success if it becomes Colorado law to greatly expand the sites where permit holders are prohibited from carrying.

Colorado lawmakers are clearly on a quest to mimic their California brethren in enacting the most draconian gun control measures possible. Anti-gunners now control the legislature and governor’s mansion, so expect more restrictive measures to come down the pike soon in their mad dash to restrict gun rights.
