A funny thing happened on the road to the Wild West and blood running in the streets. Reports on violent crime in 2023 now indicate the year likely saw the largest one-year decline in homicides ever recorded in the U.S.

And this coincided with a radical expansion of states opting for constitutional carry status and permitless carry.

There are currently 28 such states that do not require law-abiding citizens to go crawling to the government for permission to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

With this renewed freedom came breathless prognostications of utter chaos. Anti-gun forces wailed that the lawless would now control the streets and violence would reign.

But allowing good citizens to protect themselves appears to have had the opposite effect. Of course, there are likely a myriad of factors involved, but it is impossible to dismiss just how utterly wrong the gun control crowd was in their warnings.

For example, Miami now has its lowest homicide rate since World War II.

It is also important to note that the 2023 dip in homicides is only four years removed from the largest recorded single-year increase. The COVID lockdowns and social unrest of 2020 resulted in an explosion of violence that led to many states doubling down on self-defense rights.

Just how precipitous was 2023’s drop? Preliminary data indicated over 2,000 fewer people were murdered last year compared to 2022. That’s a decline of almost 13%.

The largest previously recorded drop in homicides was 9% in 1996.

Even as concealed carry rights were enshrined across the nation, violent crime rates plummeted.

So, what happened? Again, while it is impossible to pin responsibility on a single factor, it is more important to note what did not happen. And that was the predicted bloodshed that would run rampant through American cities if concealed carry was allowed.
