Chicago officials filed suit on Tuesday against prominent handgun manufacturer Glock. The suit alleged the company is liable for what it claimed is the simple procedure with which the pistols may be converted from semi-automatic to fully automatic.

The anti-gun city government teamed up with Everytown for Gun Safety, the organization led by Mike Bloomberg.

The mayor’s office issued a press release charging that more than 1,100 Glock pistols that had been converted into illegal “machine guns” have been seized by Chicago law enforcement in the last two years.

It claimed the guns were connected “with a wide variety of crimes, including homicides, aggravated assaults, batteries, kidnappings, home invasions, carjackings and attempted robberies.”

The city asserted that Glock produced a firearm that could easily be converted to fully automatic. According to the suit, the company did not enact “reasonable steps” to address the issue.

This, the plaintiffs claimed, “is an unfair business practice, is negligent, and creates, maintains and contributes to a public nuisance.”

Chicago of course is besieged by a violent crime problem that has no end in sight. But instead of addressing the criminal elements responsible for the mayhem, city leaders notoriously attack the firearm industry as a smokescreen to cover their own policy failures.

Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) held a press conference during which he placed the blame on guns that he said are “plaguing our communities.” Not criminals, but inanimate objects.

The lawsuit noted that Glock handguns may be converted using auto sears. This is a small and relatively cheap device — the plaintiffs said it may be illegally purchased for $20 online — or created at home with a 3D printer.

The city seeks a prohibition on Glock selling these weapons in Chicago along with unspecified damages.

The venerable company has yet to publicly respond to the lawsuit.
