Colorado’s embarrassing effort to play little brother to big brother California when it pertains to gun control was exposed again on Wednesday. Gov. Jared Polis (D) signed SB24-066 into law mandating that financial services giants implement specific codes to track weapon and ammunition purchases.

This further sets up the egregious patchwork system of Merchant Category Codes (MCC) that credit card issuers will need to navigate. Over a dozen other states have laws on the books prohibiting these precursors to a national registry.

It’s almost enough to make one feel sorry for the credit card industry. Almost.

Just over a year ago, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) established these MCCs at the behest of gun control radicals. This ignited a firestorm of controversy and resulted in a “pause” on the program early last year.

Several states quickly enacted laws prohibiting this infringement on the privacy of their law-abiding citizens.

But California being California raced to require that these MCCs be enabled for all transactions in the state. And now Colorado, which seeks to mimic its larger western neighbor in everything related to the Second Amendment, fell in line this week.

Gun control extremists attempt to justify the new category by claiming that it will enable these Wall Street firms to notify law enforcement of unusual purchases.

But what constitutes unusual?

Inevitably, officials will descend onto ordinary citizens exercising their rights to purchase firearms and ammunition. Further, it does not require a high level of cynicism to clearly see where such a cataloging of all gun-related purchases may lead.

Taylor Rhodes, executive director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, explained the potential harm to Fox31. “The really dangerous thing about this is it effectively creates a back door gun registry. Let’s say you go to Cabela’s and buy a shotgun. The government will know you bought that shotgun because of the merchant code associated with your purchase.”

Beforehand, according to Rhodes, the purchase would simply have been deemed as a “sporting good.”
