Using a Chicago ATM in the dark hours of the early morning calls for situational awareness, and a 60-year-old resident certainly became aware of the inherent danger on Friday.

These cash withdrawal locations are by their nature a target for violent criminals. And though they are typically located at bank sites or in well populated areas, there is still a heightened risk when withdrawing funds during the dark hours of the night.

That’s where the Chicago resident was early on Friday.

The concealed carry permit holder was utilizing the service at about 5:30 a.m. on West 82nd Street when he was allegedly approached by a robber on a bicycle. The suspect immediately brandished a firearm and demanded that his intended victim hand over his possessions.

But the man who was targeted happened to be a valid FOID card and CCL holder.

So instead, the man using the ATM drew his own weapon, and an exchange of gunfire ensued.

According to local media reports, the alleged robber suffered several gunshot wounds and was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center. There he succumbed to his injuries.

The 60-year-old was also hit twice in the back and left forearm as the bullets flew. Security video from the scene showed the victim walking into a nearby gas station to find assistance.

He is currently in the hospital listed in stable condition.

Police reported two firearms were recovered at the scene, and the investigation is ongoing.

Even in Chicago, where gun rights are not treated with the respect a constitutional freedom demands, it is virtually impossible to imagine that the victim will face any legal consequences for his actions. The circumstances appear obvious, and no choice was left but to defend themselves with deadly force.

It is fortunate the intended victim was intelligent enough to not only jump through all the legal hoops to carry a weapon but also had that firearm when they went to the ATM early Friday morning.
