Oakland is in the grip of a retail crime wave that is forcing many longtime businesses to shutter and move elsewhere. One legacy store owner took matters into his own hands Wednesday and halted what could only be described as an invasion of his family’s workplace.

Eight alleged armed robbery suspects descended onto Phuong Jewelry, brandishing weapons and smashing glass cases. According to ABC 7, the brazen attempted heist occurred in the middle of the day at roughly 12:30 p.m.

The 76-year-old owner and a 69-year-old woman, identified as Diane, were working when the attackers appeared.

The woman rushed to the back to get her husband, and he grabbed a shotgun and confronted the gang of thieves. The suspects were frightened away, but not before they made off with an estimated 85-90% of the Chinatown store’s inventory.

Phuong Jewelry experienced robberies before, but the owners said this was the most devastating in its 40 years of operations.

Fortunately for the family there were no injuries.

Son Tony Trinh told ABC 7 that he was consumed by fear for his family when he learned of the criminal act. “We’ve been robbed a few times before but not at this level of brazen magnitude. Eight individuals and two getaway cars and guns drawn.”

Trinh added, “I thought, did my mother get shot? Did my father get shot? Did any of our staff of community members?”

The financial devastation of the shocking crime is even worse that it initially appeared. Because of rising premiums for business insurance in the area, the family had let their policy protecting their inventory lapse.

CNN detailed the crippling rash of crime pushing entrepreneurs out of the Oakland city limits. In 2023 robberies soared 38%, burglaries rose 23% and motor vehicle theft climbed 44%.
