If a violent criminal targets a school, an armed teacher may well be the last line of defense. This rings especially true in rural districts that cannot afford armed resource officers and face the reality of first responders being several minutes away.

Utah lawmakers are attempting to rewrite this narrative by supporting armed school staff, but there is growing pushback from anti-gun forces.

Gov. Spencer Cox (R) faces enormous pressure from gun control advocates to veto a pair of bills strongly approved by the state legislature. These activists rallied at the Utah State Capitol on Monday to voice their objections to a move that is gathering momentum across the nation.

Their targets are a pair of bills that reached Cox’s desk. One would provide state funding for teachers and staff who choose to be an active part of a school’s defense. The second would allow school personnel other than educators to be armed and ready.

Utah law already permits any school staffer who has a carry license to possess their weapon on campus. HB 119 would assist in preparation for an active shooter situation by providing an estimated $100,000 in funding so teachers may be better prepared.

Some vocal critics claim that a half-day of training for classroom personnel is not enough to prepare them for a real-world situation. While this is arguable, the proposal replaces what currently exists for these educators, which is no training at all.

The second bill establishes a formal “guardian” program, which would enable individuals other than educators to actively defend school campuses.

Utah lawmakers overwhelmingly supported this new program, and it is likewise on the governor’s desk awaiting his signature.

It is difficult to comprehend how those theoretically committed to “gun safety” would object to training those already permitted to carry weapons. Especially when the result may be preventing another tragedy such as Parkland or Columbine.
