Police officers have a notoriously difficult job that only becomes more burdensome when they encounter a violent domestic situation. There will almost certainly be wildly conflicting reports of the incident as tempers are raging long after the event under investigation.

But they are charged with unraveling the facts and determining exactly what transpired.

Such a case emerged in Houston Thursday evening when a man was shot multiple times by a woman in their Galleria area apartment. She told investigators she fired several rounds in self-defense.

The 26-year-old man is listed in critical condition at a local hospital. Here’s where the details get muddled.

According to KHOU 11, the couple are married. The wife told investigators that they engaged in an argument that escalated. She said he followed her into a bedroom where the conflict continued.

Allegedly fearing for her life, she fired several rounds at her husband.

Two children, ages 1 and 3, were present in the apartment when the argument and shooting occurred. Both were unharmed. The wife took the children and left the residence, but she was stopped in the parking lot and detained by responding officers.

The children were placed in the care of a family member.

Meanwhile, the woman who fired the shots told investigators that she acted in self-defense out of fear for her life. For reasons unknown, that argument did not sway prosecutors and she was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Understand, this charge was filed in Texas, a state notorious for going to great lengths to permit actions taken in self-defense or even protecting property. For prosecutors to file charges on the wife strongly indicated they were not convinced that it was necessary for her to pull the trigger.

There is a powerful lesson in this incident for gun owners. It is vitally important to be certain that a firearm is used only in cases of immediate danger, as there is not a blanket protection simply for those who allegedly react to an escalating argument.

The facts will be unraveled, and the Houston woman may ultimately be exonerated. But she must first convince the authorities that she was in critical danger.
