Illegal drugs are a scourge on U.S. society, and methamphetamine is near the top of the list of those whose use often leads to deadly outcomes. Too many violent criminals are either under the influence of meth or commit their crimes to secure more of the vile substance.

An incident this week in Monticello, Kentucky, highlighted the dangers of such drugs to the innocent population as well as the user.

It was approximately 2 a.m. on Sunday morning when a homeowner came face-to-face with the unthinkable. According to reports, 56-year-old Tracy Kidd invaded a residence for purposes unknown.

What he encountered, however, was a presumably startled person who was armed and ready for such an act.

The resident fired a single shot, striking and seriously injuring Kidd. He then dutifully reported the situation to 911 and waited for first responders to arrive.

What they found was disturbing but hardly surprising. Kidd was critically wounded, and allegedly in his possession were 40 grams of suspected meth. He was airlifted to UK Chandler Hospital for treatment.

Several key points were illustrated in this frightening encounter. The first and most obvious is that danger can strike in the privacy of your home at the most unexpected time. While possessing a legal firearm and having proper training is critical, it is also necessary to be mentally prepared for self-defense.

This means being ready to face the threat with whatever force is necessary to nullify the immediate danger. As stated many times, the weapon is an inanimate object that only does what the person possessing it makes it do.

And again, drugs are a societal plague that are involved in far too many incidents when innocent people are targeted. It was not clear whether the alleged home invader was under the influence or just in possession of meth, but the illegal substance added to the threat level faced by the courageous homeowner.
