The Second Amendment exists for several vital reasons. At the very start of the nation, the Founding Fathers noted in the Declaration of Independence the necessity to break away from a tyrannical regime — at that time it was England.

Then there was the need to form state militias in defense of the former colonies. This is of course specifically stated in the Bill of Rights as a necessary part of the new Republic.

But perhaps the most fundamental purpose behind specifically guaranteeing the right to keep and bear arms is the need for self-defense. As basic and necessary as the rights to free speech and assembly, the ability to turn away violent threats is enjoyed by every law-abiding citizen.

And examples of these rights being properly exercised are numerous and striking.

The latest came from Muskegon County, Michigan when a homeowner received a rude awakening early Monday morning.

It was approximately 2 a.m. when an alleged intruder entered an apartment attached to a residence. There the suspect is believed to have attacked the occupant.

And the rampage did not stop there.

The suspect then apparently attempted to enter the main house, but the 38-year-old male was confronted there by the homeowner. He was shot dead.

Neither the deceased suspect, the homeowner or the attack victim have been identified by authorities.

One man is dead, another is injured and yet another was apparently forced to pull the trigger to defend himself. Details remain sketchy, but the suspect is believed to have attacked one person and very well could have done more harm if he was not stopped.

What is clear is that a good guy with a gun ended the violent attack. That is the essence of the Second Amendment and the primary reason Americans arm themselves.

Self-defense, after all, is the most fundamental of all rights.
