An apartment resident in St. Louis’ LaSalle Park neighborhood learned this lesson the hard way on Friday while he and his family were simply going through their normal daily routine. That was dramatically interrupted, however, when a 32-year-old man allegedly entered the residence uninvited.
Through a wall. Naked.
The intruder then reportedly made threats toward the clearly shocked family. That’s when the 36-year-old resident determined that there was a clear and present danger and shot the alleged intruder.
Police were called to the scene, and the suspect was transported to a local hospital for what was described as a non-life-threatening injury. Undoubtedly, he will also undergo a mental health screening.
Authorities with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department classified the case as self-defense, and the investigation is ongoing. There is no word on charges being filed in the case.
Few would argue that there is an ongoing mental health crisis in the country. And while it is certain that many need treatment and deserve sympathy, that in no way means that law-abiding citizens should be forced to be vulnerable to attacks carried out for any reason.
The Second Amendment guarantees the right to armed self-defense for those who follow the law. In this case and countless others, it appears certain that this is what transpired.
A violent threat was made, and an appropriate response followed. Without the threat there would be no response, no injuries and nothing to report on.
