Of all the residences to attempt to break into, an off-duty police officer’s should not be at the top of the list. After all, it is nearly certain they are armed and highly trained to handle such an encounter — with deadly force if necessary.

Unfortunately for the latest bad guy to encounter a good guy with a gun, that’s exactly what happened Tuesday morning in Atlanta.

It was roughly 5 a.m. at an apartment complex on Hollywood Road when the officer encountered the suspect. The incident could not have come as very much of a surprise as the area is dealing with rampant property crimes.

As the unidentified suspect attempted to enter the apartment, the alert officer retrieved his handgun and fired.

Fortunately for the alleged criminal, he was not struck by a bullet. Unfortunately for the same person, in the process he fell three stories to the ground.

Investigators revealed the suspect suffered non-life-threatening injuries from the fall and is being treated.

The officer is not currently being identified as the investigation continues.

A resident told local media that the violent encounter is not surprising with the skyrocketing crime rate in the area. Perhaps it will make the next alleged burglar think twice about entering a dwelling unannounced in the dark overnight hours.

These are the stories that are often lost in the mainstream media. Good guys with guns are everywhere, and as criminals become more brash, these defenders are prepared to protect life and property.

This off-duty police officer could be expected to have a firearm, but it is also necessary for everyday civilians to be as prepared as possible to face the unexpected. For most law-abiding people, this means having a legal and secure weapon readily available to confront sudden danger.
