An attempted auto theft turned deadly early Monday morning in San Antonio as a 16-year-old suspect lost his life. Despite numbers in some criminal categories dropping in the past year, the same cannot be said for vehicle thefts.

Incidents across the nation are skyrocketing, and this leads to more potentially fatal showdowns between would-be thieves and car owners defending their property.

According to local media, the violent encounter took place at around 2:20 a.m. at the Reserve San Antonio apartment complex. Investigators reported that the owner of the vehicle heard glass breaking outside of his residence.

When he exited his apartment, he discovered the 16-year-old allegedly inside his car attempting to steal it.

The owner told officers he believed the suspect was armed, so he fired a single shot. The bullet struck the young man in the side of the chest and killed him.

There is no word from law enforcement if the alleged thief was armed, though the owner believed he had every reason to fear this possibility.

The young man who died was identified as 16-year-old Adam Tino Arroyo.

Police have not indicated whether the vehicle owner will face charges and said the investigation is ongoing. But as the incident unfolded in Texas, there are sweeping laws that come into play that may protect the shooter.

Texas is quite specific in permitting the people to defend their property against criminals. The bar in the Lone Star State is not nearly so high as it is in anti-gun enclaves across the nation, and the vehicle owner may well be thankful that he is a resident there.

The loss of life is not celebrated, as a young man appears to have made a very bad choice and paid the ultimate price. But few will blame a law-abiding person for defending themselves and their property against those who would steal it, and taking such action is taking your life into your own hands.
