Threats of violence by their very nature are unpredictable. Not knowing when or where such an encounter may unfold greatly increases the need to be alert and always prepared.

Even in the comfort and relative safety of a person’s home, nothing is guaranteed. In the middle of the afternoon or the dead of night, readiness is critical.

For one Michigan resident, the violent threat exploded in the middle of the day. It was 5 p.m. on Monday when a Bay City person encountered an alleged home invader in their home.

A 33-year-old Bay City man apparently barged into the residence armed with a pipe. When police quickly responded to the scene, they found the suspect made a critical mistake.

The homeowner was armed and ready, and fired at least two shots to stop the sudden threat.

According to the Bay City Department of Public Safety, their investigation revealed the individual who suffered from two gunshot wounds to the torso allegedly broke in for reasons unknown. He was found lying on the ground outside the residence.

The man was transported to a local hospital where he was listed in serious but stable condition. Investigators continued probing the incident and no charges were filed against the unidentified resident.

It is never a good idea to break into another person’s home, and there is a serious risk involved when such a dangerous move is undertaken when armed with only a pipe. Tens of millions of Americans are armed with much more than a metal tube, and the likelihood of encountering one of them during a violent break-in is quite significant.

As for the homeowner, they were wise to be ready for such an incident, even in the middle of the day. It is an unfortunate reality that such encounters are increasingly common and must be prepared for.

That’s where the Second Amendment comes in. The right to keep and bear arms is fundamental to proper self-defense, and in this Michigan case, a homeowner is grateful today for that constitutional protection.
