A Florida man’s apparently wild night ended when he allegedly tried to break into a residence only to be confronted by the armed homeowner. The surprised but prepared resident had other plans.

Investigators in Cape Coral report that 44-year-old Hugh McMenamin was arrested last week after a night that apparently began at a Hooters restaurant location ended with the later confrontation.

According to the police report, McMenamin allegedly caused a commotion at the business and then refused to leave. He apparently did at some point, since according to Wink News he later attempted to break into a local home.

The residence sported a 6-foot fence, but that was only a challenge to be overcome. McMenamin reportedly was able to push over portions of the surrounding structure to gain access to the property.

Not done there, he allegedly kicked in the front door of the home. During the process of causing such mayhem, McMenamin allegedly lost his mother’s debit card on the homeowner’s driveway.

There’s no word if that’s what he used during his evening’s festivities at Hooters.

The homeowner was not amused, especially when the suspect allegedly attempted to enter through a window. The resident retrieved a weapon and fired several shots at McMenamin. That was when police descended upon the scene and took the suspect into custody.

According to Lee County booking records, McMenamin is charged with criminal mischief, property damage and burglary of an occupied structure. He is believed to have caused approximately $3,000 in damage at the home.

Records show he has been arrested multiple times, including in 2021 when he was charged for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

As is so often the case, an armed homeowner stepped up and stopped a scenario that could have ended quite differently. There is no word on any charges against the defender and very likely there will be none as they were by all accounts protecting themselves.
