Trouble found a retired NYPD cop on Staten Island Wednesday, and he responded to a life-and-death confrontation with lethal force.

The startling encounter erupted just before 9:30 a.m. following what was apparently a minor traffic collision. The accident occurred on a tree-lined residential street and should have ended with exchanging insurance information and the police making a report.

But according to investigators, the mishap escalated quickly when the other driver, a 45-year-old man, approached the former officer carrying a machete.

The 50-year-old retired cop reacted quickly when he produced a firearm and shot the threatening driver in the chest.

The wounded driver was transported to Staten Island University Hospital where he was at last report listed in stable condition. The former officer remained on the scene and cooperated with the authorities.

The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed. Nor should they be if the incident happened the way by all accounts it did, as the intended victim was well within his rights to protect himself from a violent threat.

As a former officer, the shooter knew he had only moments to defend himself. He responded the way an armed citizen is expected to when faced with the threat of imminent violence.

Local media reported it was the first shooting in the area in more than a year. The period of relative quiet saw a 13% drop in crime in the surrounding neighborhoods, but residents were understandably rattled by the Wednesday incident.

One neighbor who remained unnamed told reporters that the violent confrontation was out of character for the normally quiet block. “It’s quite alarming, knowing something like this happened here. It reminds you it can happen anywhere, anytime. Didn’t expect something like this in our quiet area, but it’s still a very nice and good neighborhood.”
