While there are far too many examples of politicians catering to anti-gun forces and working to suppress Second Amendment rights, it must be recognized when lawmakers take a stand for personal freedoms.

Such is the case in Tennessee, which has not been immune to the rhetoric and grandstanding of those who would strip away constitutional rights.

As the National Rifle Association (NRA) appreciatively noted, both the state Senate and a House committee last week approved a measure to protect the financial and personal privacy of gun owners.

First it was the Senate on an overwhelming 25-5 vote on Tuesday giving its stamp of approval to Senate Bill 2223. Then on Thursday the House Commerce Committee advanced the companion House Bill 2762 on a voice vote.

It now moves to the House floor for a vote that is also anticipated to be overwhelmingly in favor.

The twin measures prohibit payment processors from using merchant category codes (MCCs) specific to firearms and ammunition. Even a cursory glance quickly reveals the dangers of having this type of tracking of firearm and ammo purchases.

This scheme was hatched in 2022 by anti-Second Amendment forces and appeared to be steamrolling toward implementation. But something funny happened along the way to establishing the groundwork for a national gun registry.

One state after another threw up the stop sign and barred such practices. Momentum increased to where last March an announcement came from Visa, Mastercard and American Express that they were pausing the MCC program.

But complete victory was only temporary as California passed legislation requiring such tracking. Colorado is considering an almost identical law.

This means that those who favor individual rights must be vigilant, and more states are lining up to join the crusade. Tennessee is the latest, and kudos to its lawmakers for taking a stand on the side of the Constitution and personal freedom.
