Burglary is a dangerous business, and doubly so in states such as Texas that harbor a healthy respect for the fundamental right to defend one’s life and property. For one alleged criminal, this is a lesson that was nearly paid for with his life.

The situation came to light only when an alleged car burglar walked into a San Antonio hospital around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday suffering gunshot wounds. He made it through the door before collapsing.

According to multiple reports, a homeowner detected someone attempting to break into his car and went outside to investigate.

As common sense would dictate, he was properly armed.

What he found, according to local media, were two alleged burglars attempting to enter his vehicle. At that point the homeowner opened fire on the suspects.

According to one report, he is believed to have shot “at least 14 rounds.”

One of the suspects, apparently the only one injured, was able to flee in a red car before walking into the local Baptist hospital at that early hour. He then collapsed and received medical attention for gunshot wounds to both legs.

The unidentified suspect reportedly told emergency workers that he walked from the shooting scene, but the red car with blood inside was soon found by investigators.

The getaway vehicle was located parked at a nearby Great Clips, but the other suspect was not found. Workers were later seen towing the car away from the hospital.

There is no word on whether either of the two suspects was armed, but it is reasonable for the homeowner to suspect they were. Details of the confrontation are also sketchy.

But Texas being Texas, the man who defended his property likely has nothing to worry about. He is fortunate to live in an area that honors the right to self-defense and focuses the weight of law enforcement on the criminal, not the intended victim.
