A Washington state family is fortunate today that one of its members, a 24-year-old male, had a ready firearm to respond to multiple suspects allegedly forcing their way into the home.
The Kent Police Department responded just before 3 a.m. on Monday to a call reporting a loud noise and strangers in the residence. What they found when they arrived was utter chaos.
Husband encountered armed suspect when he went downstairs to investigate
According to the preliminary investigation, a female resident alerted her husband to someone in the house. He grabbed a weapon out of a bedside safe and went to check out the source of the disturbance.
After going downstairs in the dead of night, the man encountered an armed intruder. At that point he did what any reasonable and prepared person would do—he fired multiple shots at the adult male suspect.
Officers attempted to treat the injured suspect, and he was transported to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition. A rifle was found next to where he was down when the police arrived.
Defender must now wait for the prosecutor’s decision
Even though Washington state is far from Second Amendment-friendly territory, the young resident who protected himself should be in the clear. Assistant Police Chief Jarod Kasner told reporters that the department will “start narrowing down to see were the actions reasonable by the person based off the circumstances that were unfolding.”
Ultimately, it will be the prosecutor’s decision on whether the defender faces charges.
Investigators believe there were multiple invaders, though they do not know the exact number. A manhunt ensued, but even with the assistance of a K-9 officer, no other suspects were located.
The targeted home sits adjacent to two schools, and buses transporting students had to navigate through a horde of police vehicles that remained on the scene for hours.
