Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) took a stand for gun rights in resistance to the state legislature’s aim to curtail the Second Amendment by vetoing a pair of bills sent to his desk. And he did it in a courageous way that will certainly draw criticism from some quarters.

Both bills allegedly dealt with “gun safety,” which is the new buzzword among advocates for stripping firearms from the public.

Youngkin’s first veto struck down a proposal that would enact new restrictions on individuals credibly accused or convicted of domestic crimes. The bill would bar owners of weapons from turning them over to another person in the same residence or to a person under 21.

The governor expressed his concerns in his veto statement. He noted the “arbitrary age prohibition” and the sweeping nature of the bill that would also target those “not subject to a court order.”

Youngkin explained his sound reasoning for the veto.

“Make no mistake, Virginia should ensure that domestic abusers are dealt with appropriately, and those who resort to illegal firearm use, especially, should face severe and harsh punishments.” But he added, “The legislation fails to achieve its intended purpose and is unnecessary.”

Youngkin took particular exception to stripping gun rights from those not subject to a court order. He also correctly noted the arbitrary age attached to the bill, which would violate the rights of young adults to bear arms.

The second gun control bill addressed by the governor dealt with the state policy of requiring school boards to inform parents of safe storage laws and gun risks.

Youngkin recommended amendments to the measure that included a broader array of parental “rights” and “responsibilities.” These would grant the ability to block their child from exposure to inappropriate materials at school and enact drug prevention measures.

That bill would have to be reapproved in 2025 before it would take effect.

Youngkin appeared to hit the right chords in preserving gun rights. If the Virginia legislature is truly concerned with public safety, it will follow his recommendations and act in a way that respects the Second Amendment.
